About York Music Hub

YORK’S Musical Partnerships

York Music Hub is a strong, inclusive partnership of key providers of music education within the city of York. It was established to provide and sustain musical diversity and excellence and to enhance the education, life experience and self confidence of children and young people through music making.

York Music Hub is only as good as its partners, all of whom, in a variety of different ways, inspire, improve and enhance the lives of young people. Our role is to support, commission, enable and showcase their work. We believe that, by working together, combining and pooling experience and expertise, we can achieve our shared goals.

Funded by the Department for Education

We are funded by the Department for Education and managed by the Arts Council England (ACE). York Music Hub have partnered with North Yorkshire Council who act as the Hub Lead Organisation for the wider area.

The grant from the Arts Council is conditional upon the delivery of the National Plan for Music Education. To enable all children and young people to learn to sing, play an instrument and create music together. And have the opportunity to progress their musical interestes and talents, including professionally.

Every Music Education Hub is expected:

  • To support schools and other education settings to deliver high-quality music education
  • To support young people to further develop their musical interests and talent, including into employment
  • To support all children and young people to engage with a range of musical opportunities in and out of school

Every Hub Lead Organisation:

has responsiblity for five strategic functions which describe how the Hub Lead Organisation will deliver its local plan for music education:

  • Partnership
  • Schools
  • Progression and Musical Development
  • Inclusion
  • Sustainability

Working in Partnership

In partnership with organisations and schools in the city, York Music Hub aims to create the very best opportunities for children and young people to get involved in music making. Our role is to ensure that progression routes exist for every child to take their music to the highest level they want to, (regardless of race, gender, background, educational need or disability). In order to do this, we support a range of groups and ensembles, one-off events and festivals, and work with partners to provide free access to music education opportunities to children and young people who would otherwise face barriers to progressing their music making.

A Charitable Incorporated Organisation

York Music Hub is an independent charity, or Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), regulated by the Charities Commission. Our work is governed by a constitution which is a legal document and by our Terms of Reference, which describe how it all works in practice.
